Lighting control ballasts which drive gas discharge fluorescent lamps are available in two types: The traditional ballasts are based upon a 50Hz electromagentic circuit and consist of a laminated iron core with winding of insulated copper wire. However, the most popular options are electronic ballasts that operate using high frequency electronic circuitry as these can significantly reduce energy costs. High Intensity Discharge (H.I.D.) Ballasts The majority of HID lamps are operated using copper-iron control gear. These are based upon a 50Hz electrmagentic circuit and consist of a laminated iron core with winding of insulated copper wire.
